Review of Nightshifted

Nightshifted - Cassie Alexander

Edie Spence is a bit of a loner, she just recently landed a new job at the worst hospital in the city, County. Even worse she is on a secret floor called Y4 where they take care of society’s paranormal citizens (i.e. shifters, zombies, vampires, etc). She is adjusting to life fairly well when she makes a mistake with a vampire/servant one night and on his death bead he tells her to save Anna. For some reason Edie feels to the need to do something and so she ends up finding Anna but the girl is not just a girl but a vampire who has been terribly abused. Meanwhile Edie has other problems a junkie brother and love life that is a bit twisted.

I wanted to love this book much more than I did. First the good parts, while the story is a bit cliché with the vampires, I did like this shadows, ghosts and Anna. Ever since Interview with a Vampire I have a thing for the child vampire – can you imagine adult thoughts trapped in a child’s body? Of course she is absolutely terrifying which makes her all the better.

Now about Edie, I cannot decide if I like her or not. There are quite a few times where she comes off as idioic. For example she wants to go dancing and ends up with a one night stand only a few days later to hear about a mutant strain of syphilis so she goes back to the club looking for the same guy only to have yet another one night stand. Really nurse Edie?? Then there is her brother so you make this huge sacrifice to save him only you never deem it necessary to tell him? OR you run head first into a world you know nothing about but are terrified of because of the things you see on Y4.

The other issue with the book is I don’t get the world. Like what city does it take place in? We have a zombie who cannot feel things but can have sex. Could not quite figure out how that worked then we have the shifters who shift into anything through touch…? Sometimes except when they don’t?  I wanted to understand why she made the choices with her brother and what happened to her family. I want to know why she has zero friends and understand the paranormal society.

Overall parts of the books are extremely interesting and I am hoping a lot of the issues suffer from first book syndrome. I find the world curious and I want to know more about it. So at some point I plan to get my hands on the next book and see if some of my issues get resolved.
