Review of Craved...I did not crave this book at all

Craved - Stephanie Nelson

I had heard about Craved as a recommendation from a friend. She said the book was light and entertaining.

For 99 cents I figured why not.

Why not indeed – I should have read other reviews.

The story is about a witch named Gwen who lives in a town of super naturals only – think  enclave of witches, vampires, faeries, and werewolves but no humans are allowed. She lives with her best friend and has a little potions shop. Life is not quite grand fro Gwen as she is still nursing heart ache from breaking up with her shifter boyfriend Micah eight months ago, but there is a sexy vampire Aidan who has been pursuing her for the past 2 years. Ok so one day Gwen reads in the paper that a witch has been murdered and Gwen cannot standby and do nothing. No she has the gift of speaking with ghosts so rustles with herself for a few minutes then calls over to the police department to offer her services. Guess who the detective is Micah the ex boyfriend. Well now Gwen has placed herself in the middle of a murder investigation with her ex and now she has to appease her new suitor all while avoiding the killer because she is a witch too.

Ok so I thought initially new author 99 cents lets go – I was not expecting great but I did expect a little more than this. To be fair the plot has a lot of promise and I think with a good editor the execution would have been much better. Foe example some things did not make sense vampires have their own magic then we hear they only have magic when they drink witches blood…witches blood is addictive to vampires and drinking blood can be highly sexual…the main character is a witch her boyfriend is a vampire but no one thought it would be an issue – actually it never is an issue?? Ok that is hard to follow let me try another one witches can do their change clothes with a thought but you go to a tailor to get a fancy dress???

Moving on the world building was also kind of strange so no humans in the town but then they go out of town to a club with supernatural beings…huh?? Then there is a shopping day once a year in the town that humans cannot come to. Yeah it is just me so anyway Gwen herself is not really a well educated witch – yet she went to a witch school and is surrounded by other witches weird. Ok then she hates Aiden or is irritated by him but somehow with very little effort on his she is madly in love with him and he with her. I could not figure out what exactly he saw in her, once they are ‘together’ she seems to tell him to mind his own business quite often because she is doing what she needs to and like a good 600 year old vampire he just takes it.  The secondary characters are not much better the best friend is rather selfish, Micah is probably the worst detective ever – actually it is the worst police department ever why take a consultant on interviews and to track down leads?? Even the villain was mildly craft – I mean you know he did it right away.

Ok I am going to stop nitpicking – here is the thing. The author has talent I wanted to like the story more I wanted it to get better. While it says it was published by Everdark publishing I think this is a self published book – if not shame on them because a good editor could have worked with the author to bring out all the potential in this book. A lot of the issues are really about pace and details that could have turned this into a five star read. For me personally I will skip the next one but if you read it and it is awesome let me know I may reconsider.
