Sirantha Jax is a highly esteemed corps jumper which means she possesses this natural ability to jump ships through grimspace. After five hundred or so jumps she is not only rare but very special because she and her partner have charted so many places. Her last mission for the corps has gone very bed, everyone on board has died and now Jax is the only survivor. Jax has no memory of what happened in the flight and now she is in jail undergoing psychic treatment. Then a group of rogue fighters free her in exchange for her to teach new jumpers how to jump in grimspace. Jax wants to be willing after all they saved her but she is suffering the loss of her partner and best friend as well as the loss of who she thought she was, how can she possibly be a valued part of the resistance when everything she touches crumbles.
This book has been sitting on my nook forever and I have no idea why I have not read it before. Overall I enjoyed reading the book very much! I really liked the characters…Sirantha Jax is one of the most intriguing heroines I have read in a long time. She has lived an entire lifetime and she has so little expectation for the future yet I think she is starting to learn that she has not really lived at all. I also like March but he is your typical brooding alpha hero who is trying to be a better man. I also liked the books themes of betrayal and politics, the plot and pace kept it all very interesting.
When the author writes about Jax and how she feels in grimspace, you feel very emotional along with her, but there are some key world building elements that I did not quite get. Like how exactly does she work with the pilot, I get it is some mind opening thing but is there a computer? I assume so but what does it look like and what do the ships run on? So while I am emotionally attached to Jax and her plight I am not sure the world building is so great, in fact it seems a little weak. Another issue with the book was the beginning for the first few chapters I thought interesting but I have no idea what is going on.
Still the writing is solid and helps smooth out a lot of the issues I had and I have already ordered book 2.
