The Chief - Monica McCarty Tor MacLeod is a the leader of his clan and after living in a lifetime of war he has no interest taking sides in the coming battles between England and Scotland. Unfortunately for Thor he has quite the reputation and despite his resistance circumstances force him in the position not only choose a side but also become a party in a treasonous plot. Christina is a sweet woman whose does her father's bidding at his abusive hand. Her father, Fraser has offered Tor his daughter Christina but Tor has refused, Fraser is unwilling to accept no as an answer and forces Christina to sneak into Tor's chambers while he is sleeping so it will appear that Christina is compromised thus forcing a marriage between Christina and Thor. Now not only is Thor caught up in politics between the crown but he also has a wife who could be more trouble than she is worth.

This book is based on actual events of Robert the Bruce which I though was completely fascinating. The romance is a bit rocky Christina is a little aggravating with her "I am sorry...I was only trying to help" every five minutes. I mean it is all well intentioned and it probably fits with the time period but it just irked me. Tor of course is equally pig headed but given the time period both of their attitudes seem to fit. I totally fell in love with the plot surrounding the romance and I really enjoyed how it was interweave within the story.

As a romance novel this one has a lot of challenges. I think Christina is just immature and Thor wants to blame her for everything. While we see lots of individual monologue they do not ever seem to come together or work things through. For me this lessons the passion in the bedroom.

Still overall a good book but I think I enjoyed it more for the politics than the relationship.
