Old Man's War - John Scalzi It has been a long time since I read a science fiction book and right now I am so grateful I started back with this one.

First off the book is funny as hell! Scalzi has an incredible mind who has a fantastic writing ability he created a fairly complex world without it feeling so. Part of what was so attractive was how I could see the 75 year old man being my dad or my uncle and that was truly refreshing. Loved the fight scenes it gave you enough so it felt intense but not horrific.

So for the summary in short Earth is now playing in the universe BUT it is a rather hostile place. For whatever reason the Colonial Defense Force has decided that people on Earth remain ignorant as to what goes on in the galaxy. If you are a US citizen when you are 75 you get to go in to outer space and protect humanity and the colonies that exist beyond the planet but there is one condition you never go back. The story is formed around one man John Perry who is done with his life on Earth, he is old, his body is giving out, his wife is dead and well he decides to complete the last plans he and his wife made. The CDF asks you to sign a contract saying that you will fight with CDF for a minimum of two years and a maximum of ten then you can live out the rest of your life on a colony. Oh and they will heal whatever ails you. John honestly does not know what to expect but soon he enters a world the he truly could have never comprehended moreover he quickly finds out that his chance of survival is VERY low.

I loved every minute of this ride and it totally pays homage to Robert A. Heinlein.
