I think this one has the potential to be a great story the execution left a lot to be desired. The story opens at a murder scene of a young boy. The boy becomes the first who have been drained of blood, and from there we have a mystery.
The challenge for me was the characters, in short they were not endearing for me; it felt like there were to many stereotypes. The tough detective, Jackie, who hides her feelings and wants to fight for justice. Tough is fine but in my opinion she was so vulgar and useless needless to say I never warmed up to her. Her partner, Laurel, is supposed to be the softer one the author tried to make her more interesting and made her a lesbian which is fine, what is odd is that everyone but her partner (Jackie, the top FBI detective) knows. In the end she was a little forgetful. Next is the poor suffering vampire, Nick, his character is the most interesting but he got bullied by everyone and that was a real turn off.
Then the mystery part well it did not quite pan out. Not to give anything away but why does the vampire tell everyone his story but me the reader? Why is the FBI even in this story? It felt cumbersome and in the end it did not add any value to the story.
So what is good about this book is the second half, while he pace does not pick up the characters start to have some depth and you get a bit of action. Overall I think the book needed some editing and a bit more focus.
