Harbinger of Books

The Proposition reminds me of a fairy tale but I am not sure which one. The story is about an ugly duckling, Edwina, who is freckled and gangly who is also a linguist who comes across a rat catcher, Mick. After a coffee house incident a wager is made that Mick can be transformed into a gentlemen by Edwina.

I think the best part about this book is the writing. Ms. Ivory has a way of making a character seem vulnerable but not weak or strong without arrogance. The characters feel three dimensional and some parts were funny and silly and others were disheartening. The romance was also quite good.
