I am surprised this book has so many high ratings so I guess perhaps part of the problem with this one is me.
I picked this up from the library because I thought oh Native Americans and shifter maybe a good story. I got a bad version of Zorro with a lot of clumsy writing and a love affair that fell flat.
The story is about a man named Reno, who is a military dude and like the best sniper but one day the general kills his wife and kid. Reno threatens the general and gets thrown into jail with a twenty year sentence. Three years later a man comes to him who needs a sniper for an assignment in Ecuador. The deal is if he kills El Espanto then he can live free anywhere in the world other than the US. Obviously Reno takes the deal he goes to Ecuador and meets Calen who he is instantly attracted to.
Calen is leading a double life she is a billionaire oil woman by day and El Espanto by night where she saves the poor from greedy people who would otherwise kill her. Calen is just the ultimate in everything. When she mets Reno she tool feels a sense of peace that she has never felt before but Calen knows Reno is in Ecuador to kill her. Together they find they have a common destiny and they will love each other and fight for justice.
Here is where my issues are the first is the writing itself, we get tons of details like I squeezed lemon in my tea, or the people have no pots because they are so poor, or Calen is very busy running her empire. On the other side we are told repeatedly that she is a billionaire and Reno is nothing but an ex-con, oh and her money can do everything build schools and hospitals thanks to her booming oil business. The issue here is these minor details go no where, it just takes up several words on a page, I mean maybe I would like to know what Calen is so busy doing, how does Reno overcome his self defeating outlook and feel like a man, maybe I would like to know why she likes tart tea with lemon, maybe the author can make this fit the big picture. Ultimately the connections are missing and I think it was made the characters come off as being two dimensional. The next issue are the inconsistencies in the story, Reno knows right away that the man who visits him in jail is a shifter but the woman he falls in love with at first sight no clue. Perhaps love is blind. Another issue is the evil villain in the book has never shows up just his minions who have to be the worst trained guards ever. Then the book tries to get deep it speaks about world peace if this woman is pregnant and finds these stones then we will enter the age of peace. This book is about 300 pages and really if it was a 100 page novella it would have been awesome.
As you may guess this is not a series I will be following.
