Their Eyes Were Watching God: A Novel - Zora Neale Hurston I first read this book in college, it was an assignment for my English Lit class. At first I hated it the vernacular was strange to me and it was weird to see how I speak written down. By the end of the book I loved it and I was thankful she did use the language because it drew me completely into the story. About the story though, really the plot is so loose, I guess I would say that it is a story about Janie, a young black woman who starts out trying to find herself in the eyes of others, she is trying to find love. In this search she not only finds herself but she also starts to see how society sees her. In this place she finds peace and goes home. Janie learns to endure oppression, suppression, and tragedy. It has been awhile since I last read it and being a bit older maybe a bit more jaded I see the story differently and I like it more.
