The Shadow Reader - Sandy Williams Humans and Fae live in a world adjacent to each other, there are some humans who have the gift and can see the fae or in Mackenzie's case she can see where they travel to. Mackenzie has been working for the court for ten years, she is not so much loyal to the King but to a man who is the king's sword master Kyol. Kyol also cares for Mackenzie but his loyalty is first to the King so thing means that despite his desire for her he refused to love her. Then one day Mackenzie is kidnapped and forced to see what the real situation with the fae is and she is also rethinking her choices.

The book is a solid one I thought the writing was well done as was the plot. Really if we took the love part out of it the book would have been five stars, but we have a love interest and for me this was the downfall. Mackenzie has put her entire life on hold, she is rejected by her parents, she has one friend, never had a boyfriend, never been kissed by anyone other than the fae, then on top of it all she has no skills - she cannot defend herself, she is poor - because she did not want money it would raise suspicion, she could not even speak the fae language. Then a man comes and kidnaps her and opens her eyes but like a true co-dependent woman she has a hard time believing it. Then there is the King himself I mean he is to stupid to sit on the throne, how does a king not know what goes on in his own court? How does he not see that he is a pawn in others games. All in all there were to many illogical scenes that tore the story apart.
