Gin Blanco aka the “Spider” is trying to adjust to life in retirement. Instead of preparing herself for her next assignment now she is cooking at the Pork Pit and taking classes at the community college. Her life is not as exciting as it was, until one day a punk kid decides to rob the Peach Pit. The life gets more complicated because a young girl, Violet Fox, comes in looking for the Time Man (aka Spiders old handler Fletcher Lane) and someone is attempting to harm her. Gin decides to come out of retirement but this time as a vigilante.
It was interesting to see Gin as a vigilante, it gave her a more well rounded feel and I actually think I like her more now. I really liked seeing how her friends and family rally around her to support her. In this book we get to learn a bit more about Gin's past and more about Fletcher which is nice. We also get to know a few new characters which I hope stay around for awhile. The plot is not at all complex and it moves rather quickly, I like that the mystery unfolds and the reader can enjoy the ride.
The book lost a star because of two things: The first is all of the repetition, why is it I get a description of elemental magic in almost every chapter, I read it in the beginning I am good for the rest of the book. Or the eyes, no one has regular brown eyes they are all gold, grey, violet, etc and ever serious conversation we are reminded about eye color. I am also pretty sure I know exactly what Gin ate for every meal in this book, and that is not necessarily a good thing. Another issue was the characters seemed to do things out of character for lack of a better word. For example Gin who is silly paranoid just talks freely like she has diarrhea of the mouth, next she seemed careless which is also out of character, not checking for alarms, taking ff her gloves, not having a fall back plan, not training yet she still carries her knives, it all just seemed really off to me. Even Donovan acted out of character the old Donovan would have arrested her instead of going home and moaning in a glass of wine with Kenny G.
Speaking of Donovan I have a quick rant Donovan Caine why oh why is Gin so stuck on this jerk? I think it is supposed to be she is drawn to him but to bend for him is like to compromise herself. Meanwhile he does not want to but he cannot help but to condemn her and her profession thus he cannot ever accept her and the only way to escape her is to leave…WTH? Over dramatic much? I really do not see the emotional attachment he seems to honestly disapprove of Gin and she is keeps throwing herself at him over and over, the man does not want her. It was just sad really. I was really hoping Gin would grow a pair and drop that idiot for Owen, but nope she is nursing her tattered heart. .
All and all it was a great book I thoroughly enjoyed it.
