Something from the Nightside - Simon R. Green This is a story about a man named John Taylor who is a private detective working in modern day London, but John has a gift he can find things, especially in a place called the Nightside. The Nightside is a hidden magical place in London, in this place nothing is what it seems and you can trust no one. John has stayed out of the Nightside for 5 years but a lack of business and a paying client has sent John on a mission to find a missing girl.

Sounds good right, and honestly the book has a lot of promise but it fell down because it has first book syndrome and the author over explained a little too much. One phrase that was used repeatedly was “…in the Nightside” really is this where we are because you remind me every other paragraph. All of this over explanation made for a bit of a weak plot. Then the characters fell flat they felt a little blah and the introduction of characters was just wordy…endless paragraphs of why someone was evil and despicable weakened the overall point.

Despite all of that the book was not horrible and I gave it two stars because I did finish it. In part I may have finished it because it was an audio and the reader was interesting. The next one I will read and hopefully the series may pick up a bit.
