Bitter Night - Diana Pharaoh Francis Max was forced to become the witch's Shadowblade Prime (the witch's elite protector) she is bound to shadow, poisoned by sunlight and hurt by direct moonlight. However Max is disgruntle, because she was bound to a witch that she trusted as a friend. Then one night on a routine run she meets a hag and another witch's shadowblade and her world is turned upside down, because there is a war coming and the Guardians want to take back the planet but without the humans.

I think the world in this story was really original. The world is violent and cruel but then it is also balanced with honor and trust. I loved the idea that loyalty to the witch is done by compulsion spells that cannot be broken. I also really liked Max who had dreams of a normal human life family, career and children only to loose it one night when she was drunk at a bar. Max just does what needs to be done without whining and she has a coping mechanism where she pulls deep into herself to handle it. The angles as slaves I also thought was pretty interesting.

The problem I had was 2 narrators (Max and Alexander) both in 3rd person. I think Max was a great well rounded character, but Alexander well he was flakey one hand he was a prime, strong and deadly, then a chapter later he is peeing on himself for Max?? Why, I just did not buy into the possible love interest angle or comradery.

Overall though a great read will definitely read the next one.
