Fire Baptized - Kenya Wright

Fire Baptized is an rather interesting story were super naturals are cut off from the rest of the world living in these small cities. Even among the supernatural’s there is a hierarchy – purebreds (shifters, demons, vampires, fairies, witches and pixies) run things they have money and opportunities and mixed breeds  are second class citizens. Enter Lanore a mixbreed who has been marked with a silver X. She is trying to graduate from college, and keeps to herself for the most part. Life quickly changes when she witnesses a murder and becomes determined to figure out who the killer is.

The world for this series was very interesting. Which is why it bugs the crap out of my that I am giving this book only 3 1/2  stars. Yet the inconsistencies and execution of the world prevented me from falling in love with this world.  For example LaLa (Lanore) is constantly running her fingers through her dreads but I never learn what a pixie looks like. I would love to know how these shifters ended up in the cage of a city – I mean these are strong creatures, 250 year old vampires how did the humans get them all locked up in one place?? Then there was LaLa herself, one minute she is trying to keep out of trouble then the next she wants to solve a murder without explanation – like why would she take this on? Then there was the issue between the two men – I hate love triangles – so maybe this is just my issue but most of the time it felt like she was leading them both on. Overall I had a hard time connecting to LaLa one minute she was rushing into things without thinking and the next minute she was loosing it and rather fragile (both sexually and emotionally) this did not endear her to me.

What I liked about this book was the writing and this unique world. I think the author has a lot of talent and would do well with a good editor or beat reader for better execution. Hopefully in the next book LaLa will hit her stride and some of my issues will be flushed out.
